Fiction book recommendations, sorted by age,
(youngest readers will find books appeal at the top).
George's Secret Key to the Universe (science-fiction, written by incredible scientist Stephen Hawking and his daughter) - “So really,” continued Eric, “I should be saying sorry to you, for jumping to the wrong conclusion. Instead of considering all the evidence, I just applied some common sense—otherwise known as prejudice—and came up with a totally wrong answer.”
Books by Rick Riordan (fiction books based on Greek/Roman gods and myths)- “Pain is an interesting thing. You think you have reached your limit and you can’t possibly feel more tortured. Then you discover there is still another level of agony. And another level after that.”
Harry Potter series (book about a school of magic, very famous)- “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”
Wonder (In Wonder, R.J. Palacio tells the story of Auggie, a tough, sweet, 10-year-old boy, who was born with distorted facial features, very famous)- “Courage. Kindness. Friendship. Character. These are the qualities that define us as human beings, and propel us, on occasion, to greatness.”
Little Men (enjoyable to read, abut a school)- “It takes so little to make a child happy, that it is a pity in a world full of sunshine and pleasant things, that there should be any wistful faces, empty hands, or lonely little hearts.”
Biggles! (book about a mans experiences in World War 2 as a pilot)series - "Quick! Untie us before they realise you are not a God, you're just an American."
The Hobbit (fantasy book, very famous)- “It is the small things, everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keeps the darkness at bay. Simple acts of love and kindness."
Books by Eva Ibbotson ( a story set in the Amazon rainforest) - “I would let her...have adventures. I would let her...choose her path. It would be hard...it was hard...but I would do it. Oh, not completely, of course. Some things have to go on. Cleaning one's teeth, arithmetic. But Maia fell in love with the Amazon."
Books by Michael Morpurgo (about lots of stuff, good writing skills)- “Any problem can be solved between people if only they can trust each other.”
Lord of the Rings series (fantasy book, very famous)- “Frodo: I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened. Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.” The trilogy was so riveting, that it made me vicariously experience being there in their fantasy world.
The Corfu trilogy (book about a family's experiences in Corfu. This is in the list due to its incredible vocab)- "July had been blown out like a candle by a biting wind that ushered in a leaden August sky. A sharp, stinging drizzle fell, billowing into opaque grey sheets when the wind caught it."
